An internet outage today forced me to manually liquidate an open position for a loss of -$370. Due to my rules I then proceeded to shut the bot down for the day. These internet outage events are RARE but a pain when they occur.

Exciting times...

Past few days I have been running a new system live on the simulation account. This system seems to be the most promising system yet, however it has struggled a bit. Since nearly all of my strategies rely on having a good bit of volatility, my strategies have been hurting. I'm actually glad that it has entered a draw down. I believe when it starts to come out of this slump is the best time to go live. I should have the funds situated and ready to go live again by next Tuesday. Hopefully this will be just in time for the turn around.

New discoveries

Today the bot did exceptionally well gaining slightly over $1,152 per contract. All signs are pointing towards the fact that I need to get this thing running on my real money account soon. However, everyday through testing I have been discovering better trading strategies. I been telling myself from the start that when I go live again I will make sure its with the best system I have available. For this reason, there is no way I can go live yet. Especially considering some of these new strategies I am working on are LIGHT years beyond my current implementation. I guess having too many good strategies can't be a bad thing.

The market wont stop...

It has been an incredibly bullish couple of weeks now. I am starting to wonder if the market is going to every be allowed to come down again. The market is moving, so that is all that matters for my bot however. Up, or down, I just hope it keeps on moving. Another really good day.

Low volatility

I have come to realize that my trading strategy does its best in high volatility environments, or basically in environments where we get some big movement either up or down. If you look back at when my strategy performed the worse is was around the holidays. The past few weeks have been great for the bot. Today for the most part volatility was low, and as such the bot had what appears to be a "rare" loss these days. I say rare because the bot has hardly had any losing days in past 2 months. For now the bot is still on a simulation account. Until I decide which strategy I will bring live, that is where it will remain. My guess is I should be back live and with real money in the next few weeks. However, with summer fast approaching it may be best to not go live at all until the fall. Tough decision.

Lessons learned...

It has been almost 4 months since I stopped trading my stock bot with real money. Stopping the bot turned out to be a very costly mistake. The reason I turned the bot off was because it had been in a draw down phase since about a week after I went live. Looking back at it now, I realize it was just a momentary bump in the road. At the time, however, it appeared as if the bot no longer had an edge. After turning the bot off in my real money account, I switched it back to trading my Interactive Broker's sim account. The bot has since made around $8,000 per contract.

I learned a lot from my first adventure into live automated trading. The #1 thing learned is you must have faith in your bot. Draw downs happen, and you must give your program time to work its way out of these draw down periods. The second thing I learned is to never modify your live trading strategy. If you are going to make modifications to your strategy, then you should consider that a NEW strategy and you should begin forward testing that strategy on a sim account before making it your live strategy. Several times I modified my real money strategy on the fly only to see disastrous results.

Hopefully these learned lessons will help me as I move forward with going live for a second time. However, before going live this time I am testing several new strategies as well as my old strategy very thoroughly before picking the one I will go live with.

The new adventure should begin soon.
